Animals in Italy

Traveling with Your Pets in Italy

Travel with animals in Italy or anywhere else in the world is never easy. It helps to know exactly what to expect.

Here are some suggestions to make the trip smother for you and your pet animals in Italy.

Comply with all the regulations

Have all the requested papers, vaccinations, pet passports at hand. Don’t leave them with the pet, keep them with you.

In all my travels with animals I was never requested to show any paper, but be ready: you don’t want to start your holiday getting stuck at the border.

Crates

If your pet is not already crate trained, get him or her used to the cage.

The crate is not cruel: for the pet is a safe, familiar home and for you is an invaluable tool to keep your pet safe when traveling and comfortable when alone in an unfamiliar surrounding.

Food

Get your companion used to eat dry food: good quality dry food is healthy, easy to store and take with you in any situation. In Italy it can be found in any pet store or supermarket.

A word of advice if you fly: feed your dog the evening before the flight, not just before it. Dogs can happily go a day without food ( it would actually be good for the average overfed pet) and digestion during the flight would only complicate matters further.

Water

I found useful to provide a container filled with ice inside the crate. The ice will melt slowly and allow the pet to drink without spilling the water.

An alternative are the bottles with a spout often used for rabbits.

Accommodation

Make sure and double check that pet are allowed where you plan to stay.

In most facilities small, well trained dogs are welcome, but don’t ever give it for granted.

At the Restaurant

Most restaurants allow dogs. If you make a reservation ask for a table in a quiet corner. If your dog is the fussy type, spread a blanket on the floor for him, after all if he is comfortable you’ll be more relaxed too.

Beaches

Some dogs love water, the simple pleasure of swimming and playing with your pet can enhance your holiday.

Unfortunately most beaches don’t allow pets but lately some resorts are changing this policy.

Here is a list of beaches that allow pets in their premises for all Italian animal lovers.

Cars

Sometimes the car will be your last resource to safely confine your pet if access to an establishment is denied.

Most dogs will accept gladly to stay in the car if they have had enough exercise.

Please make sure the car is in the shade and well ventilated.

The temperature inside can rise very quickly and dogs and cats, trapped and unable to sweat and can easily suffer a heat stroke.

Keep them safe, cool and enjoy your holiday!
