Pros and Cons of Bus Travel in Italy

During your Italy vacations what should you choose: car rentals, train travel or bus travel in Italy?

The choice depends on what you plan to visit: the main cities, a region or a mix of these options.

Bus travel is definitely the cheapest choice, buses are comfortable, reliable and generally allow the passenger to carry large luggage at no extra charge.

The catch is that there isn’t a national bus company, each region is served by an independent bus line so you’ll first have to check if there is a bus connecting the destination of your choice.

Le Marche region are well connected by bus with Florence, Rome, Naples and Zagreb.

If you don’t find a bus service that serves the city you want to reach, train travel in Italy is your best bet. Trains cover most of the national territory at very reasonable prices and where a rail station is not available a short distance bus service will connect the train line with even the smallest village.

Car rentals in Italy can be convenient if you want to explore at your leisure a region like Le Marche where a wealth of art treasures is scattered on the territory.

Keep in mind that car rentals in Europe is more expensive than in the USA and that driving in big cities can be a very frustrating experience: streets where not build for cars and are generally narrow, the topography of ancient towns can be maddening and car parking is not a given.

It is advisable to confine the experience of driving in Italy to the quieter areas of the country.

Enjoy your trip!
