Car rentals in Italy

Car rentals in Italy: for your Marche travel a car and a good map are essential.

Car rental in Italy becomes a necessity to discover Le Marche hidden art treasures, the hill towns and the out of the way beaches that are reached by few buses and no trains.

Take heart, you’ll find the driving is not intimidating like in the big cities.

In this region everything seems to go at a slower pace then in the rest of Italy, including the traffic.

Here are a few tips to help you plan your travel to Italy.

Car leasing fares

Car rentals in Italy are more expensive than in USA. At Ancona-Falconara airport you’ll find booths of major car rental companies and in front of Ancona train station there are Avis and Hertz. It doesn’t come any easier than this!

Book in advance

July and August are the busiest months and nothing can spoil a holiday in Italy like finding out there are no cars available and getting stuck at the airport.

Get the smallest car you can fit in

Renaissance towns were not built to fit cars. Choose a car that can fit all the passengers and luggage but keep in mind you might have to drive it in narrow twisty streets and parking is not a given!

Documents

To drive in Italy, you need either an EU driving license or an International Driving License with your national license.

Highway tolls

You’ll have to pay a toll in almost all the autostrade (highways), credit cards are accepted.

Take the ticket when you enter the highway, at the exit get into the lanes that display a large sign with the credit cards, insert in the slot the toll ticket first, then the credit card.

If the machine spits out your card and starts talking to you, don’t panic! Probably is only telling you to reverse the card.

Directions

Roads are generally in good conditions and road signs are helpful but don’t rely on them only.

A good map and maybe a Tom Tom will be your best friend in your holidays in Italy.
