CHOOSING THE DATE

Ne’ di venere ne’ di marte non si sposa e non si parte.

According to Italian wedding traditions, Friday and Tuesday are unlucky day for marrying. Although marriages are often celebrated on Saturday for convenience, Sunday is considered the luckiest day for a wedding.

The favorite time of the year for getting married in Italy spans from April to September when the weather is more accommodating but May is probably the most commonly chosen month for marriages in Italy. Also Christmas with its magical atmosphere is a favorite time for getting married in Italy.

ENGAGEMENT RING

The tradition of the engagement ring must be followed at any cost to insure prosperity and happiness to the couple. It is an Italian wedding tradition that goes back to roman times when a ring was used to seal a promise of marriage.

The tradition of giving a diamond as engagement ring started during the Renaissance and it is still the most classic gift because the diamond represents enduring love.

Other precious stones have different meanings. The sapphire means fidelity, the ruby burning love, emerald for its green color, hope.

WEDDING RING

The wedding ring in Italy is called fede or sometimes also vera. It is always worn on the left ring finger. The gold and the simple circular shape of the ring symbolize the eternity and perfection of love.

Since the sixteenth century the marriage date is engraved on the inside of the ring with the name of the spouse.

The Italian wedding tradition requires that the wedding ring is chosen by the couple together but offered by the groom. The best man will bring the rings to church on the wedding day.

WEDDING GOWN

Traditionally the wedding dress of the bride is white to represent virginity and purity but now wedding gowns can also be beige.

According to Italian wedding traditions, a veil is worn to hide the bride from the groom until the end of the ceremony. To avoid bad luck the groom is not supposed to see the wedding gown before the marriage, her dress will have to be a secret until the ceremony.

BOUQUET

It is chosen by the bride to match the wedding dress but it is given by the groom who has it delivered to the bride’s home on the morning of the marriage. Orange flowers are traditionally a bride’s favorite, they symbolize purity.

RICE

After the ceremony the newly wed couple is welcome outside by a shower of rice for prosperity and fertility.

WEDDING CAKE

The cake is no small deal, it must be scenographic and delicious. It is often a multitiered cake and must be carried whole by the waiters in the room. The first cut is performed with the right hand of the man and wife tighter. The bride will serve the first slice to the groom then to the in-laws and to her parents. After the symbolic first cut the cake will be taken away by the waiters to be divided among the guests.

WEDDING FAVORS

At the end of the banquet sugared candies are given out, they are called confetti.

Wedding confetti are always white and can have an almond or chocolate center. They are always in an odd number, often five.

After the wedding cake the bride will give the confetti to the guests, helped by the groom.

These sweets are given in small white bags made of lace or tulle. Confetti are presented in bomboniere, the Italian wedding favors made of crystal, porcelain or silver. In each bomboniera will be included a small card with the first names of bride and groom and the marriage date.

The bomboniere will be given also to those who were not at the wedding but participated sending flowers, card and gifts.
