The major Italy ski resort towns on the Alps can be very crowded. For a more relaxed and cheap ski holidays, discover the Apennines mountains, in central Italy.
This area is still little known to the international skiing fans but offers great slopes and perfect snow.
We spent a week in Roccaraso and even my restless husband and kids were kept busy exploring over 100 km of of perfectly maintained slopes.
The ski slopes of Aremogna, Monte Pratello and Monte Pizzalto are all connected by ski lifts and offer days of snow fun. They are easily reached from the villages of Rivisondoli and Roccaraso.
Many hotels offer skiing packages that include the equipment rental and Monday-Friday specials.
For the cross country aficionados there are 11 ski rings and there is an ice rink for skaters.
How to get there
This area can be reached with an easy two hours drive from Rome and in little over one hour from Naples and Pescara.
Roccaraso is also a railway station on the Roma-Pescara line.
When to go
The best time to go skiing in Italy is the end of January and February.
There is plenty of snow and the days are getting longer and warmer.
Also, it is a good time for shopping, should you need any ski supplies. At this time of year shops have the best prices on the winter clothing and ski gear and equipment.
